Kids Home as Pursuit Suspect Slams Car Into Apartment

A police pursuit of a driver with a felony warrant ended when the suspect crashed into a tree and then careened into an apartment in Linda Vista Friday – a home that was filled with kids, including a newborn.

The crash happened around 4:40 p.m. at an apartment complex in 6800-block of Osler Street. The suspect’s Honda CRV slammed into an apartment, knocking down the front door.

“There was glass all over the place,” said resident Jacqueline Cruz of the aftermath at her home.

Before the crash, several kids inside the apartment were playing in the front room. Minutes before the car plowed into the home, the 5 and 6-year-old kids had decided to go upstairs to play and that decision may have saved a life.

“My brothers and sisters were downstairs but before that happened they went upstairs quickly. After that, we heard a big boom,” said Cruz.

Police said the suspect behind the wheel then took off running. However, officers were able to quickly catch up and take the man into custody. His name was not released, but officials said he was wanted on a felony warrant.

Prior to the crash, police tried to pull the suspect over in the College Area. He refused to stop and the pursuit ensued, taking police through Allied Gardens, Grantville and then Linda Vista.

None of the residents inside the apartment were injured in the incident.

However, the family had some serious clean-up on their hands. Still, everyone was thankful the accident wasn’t worse.

“I got really scared,” said Cruz. “I thought they were going to come inside the house or something.”
