A fatal car accident in Escondido caused traffic delays on southbound Interstate 15 near highway 78 Monday morning.

At around 9:45 a.m., a 20-year-old Anallely Mendoza lost control of her 1999 BMW and hit a 2000 Ford Econoline van transporting 12 passengers to Tijuana, Mexico.

The 48-year-old male passenger in Mendoza's vehicle was hit and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

Mendoza was transported to Palomar Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. The 55-year-old van driver, Gabriel Guiterrez, was also admitted for complaints of chest pain.

The accident blocked three lanes of the southbound I-15 for two hours, but authorities opened all lanes as of 11:50 a.m.

There is no word on whether the accident was weather-related -- although it was raining when the accident happened, according to CHP.
