Young Woman Killed in Crash

The crash happened Thursday morning on State Route 56

A 23-year-old woman died Thursday morning when her car drifted off State Route 56, overturned and tumbled down an ice plant-covered embankment, authorities said.

The victim was active duty in the United States Army, according to the Medical Examiner’s office. She was dressed in military-style fatigues and boots when she crashed.

The crash was reported at 5:46 a.m. on the westbound side of the freeway near Camino del Sur, according to the California Highway Patrol. The vehicle was found by a passersby who called 911.

The driver, whose name was withheld pending notification of her family, died in the wreckage of the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, the CHP reported.

The car didn’t have any plates and appeared to be new, according to the CHP.
