Xolos May be the Worst Kept Secret in San Diego

Tijuana soccer club has a huge fan base in America

The San Diego Padres Baseball Club and Chargers Football Team dominate headlines as the top two franchises in San Diego. But the Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles (commonly referred to as the Xolos) of the Primera División, or Liga MX, are gaining fan support in America’s Finest City.

With their success and top tier talent, it’s no surprise people north of the border are taking note. Club Tijuana was promoted to the Liga MX division in 2011. It took them just a year to be crowned champions.

U.S. National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has been seen at Xolos games scouting talent. Not only do the Xolos have talent, a handful of players have strong ties to San Diego. Midfielder Joe Corona graduated from Sweetwater High, Fernando Arce Jr. was born in Chula Vista and Paul Arriola and Alejandro Guido both graduated from Mater Dei High in Chula Vista. All four are also members of the U.S. National Team at different age levels.

The NBC7.com SportsWrap crew went to the Xolos watch party at The Raglan Public House in Ocean Beach to get to know why the Club Tijuana fan base is growing so rapidly in San Diego.
