Man Dies After Girlfriend Runs Him Over

A 23-year-old man died early Sunday morning in Chula Vista after his girlfriend ran him over in a car, police said.

The two were at a gathering in a parking lot in the 300 block on Third Avenue at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Witnesses told police the man was acting "very drunk and out of control." They told police that he tried to fight with the woman but his friends held him back. This resulted in a fistfight.

At one point, as the woman was trying to leave, the man reportedly threw a rock at the car she was driving, shattering the windshield. She backed up, trying to get away and struck the man.

By the time police arrived to respond to a reported fight, the man was on the ground with head trauma. He was declared dead on the scene.

The driver, who police say is in a relationship with the victim, may have lost control unintentionally, according to Eric Thunberg with the Chula Vista Police Department.

Further investigation revealed that the couple had a child together and were involved in an on-again-off-again dating relationship.

The woman was taken into custody and has been cooperating with police. The department's traffic unit is investigating. They said the woman was sober at the time of the crash and she was released.

An earlier police report stated that the fatal accident may have been DUI-related.
