A gruesome discovery in the North County after a mountain biker found a woman's body near San Marcos. Nicole Gonzales reports.
Homicide investigators worked to identify a young woman found dead along the road in a secluded part of the North County.
A mountain biker discovered the body just before 2 p.m. Wednesday on an embankment on Lawrence Welk Court, in unincorporated San Marcos.
The witness said he was riding his bike back up to his car when he noticed some debris piled up, what may have appeared to others as a pile of laundry.
As he got closer, the biker who asked not to be identified, said he thought someone was asleep or passed out drunk on the side of the road.
It didn’t take long however for him to see it was a woman lying face down off the side of the road.
He tried to roust the woman who appeared to be in her 20s with shoulder-length brown hair wearing a hoodie and baggy clothes.
“Hello? Wake up. I don't remember specifically what I said but there was no response,” the man said.
He said he immediately rode back to his car and called 911.
Investigators from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station, the Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Crime Lab, as well as the U.S. Border Patrol were soon on scene to begin the investigation.
As of Wednesday night, detectives had not declared the death a homicide but were calling the death suspicious in nature.
“There were enough suspicious circumstances to warrant the homicide detail responding to the scene,” said Lt. Larry Nesbit with San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. “Many times we respond to the scene and it turns out not to be a homicide.”
The biker said he didn’t see any blood but did notice the area around the woman’s body was trampled.
Detectives won’t reveal what kind of injuries, if any, the woman had on her body.
They contacted neighbors, hoping for witnesses but they may be hard-pressed since this area was very secluded with only a few homes on the block.
The man who discovered the body said it was a difficult experience for him but “certainly not as hard for me as it’s going to be for the parents or whoever belongs to this young lady,” he said.
