Woman Fatally Struck by Train

A woman was killed in Del Mar when a train struck her just after midnight Thursday.

The collision happened at 15th St. and Coast Blvd. in Del Mar at about 12:10 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said a woman was sitting on the railroad tracks when a train heading northbound sounded its horn and activated its track warning signals.

The woman did not respond and was fatally struck by the train.

According to investigators the engineer stopped the train, ran to the victim and called 911.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found the woman had succumbed to her injuries.

The train was momentarily put on hold, but service resumed a short time after.

In a report released Thursday afternoon, the Medical Examiner’s office identified the woman as 42-year-old San Francisco resident Denise Oberlercher.
