A woman's body was found at a rocky beach below Sunset Cliffs near Bermuda Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators have not identified her or determined how she died, but witnesses told NBC 7 they saw her step through a gap in a chain-link fence that separates the street and the cliff, presumably to scale down to the beach, at around 2 p.m.
Lifeguards and San Diego Fire-Rescue responded to reports of a woman on the rocks below the cliffs at around 2:30 p.m. A witness who wished not to be identified told NBC she did not see obvious signs of trauma on the body.
Firefighters said the drop is about 75 feet with concrete and rocks at the bottom. The beach below is only accessible during low tide.
A woman who witnesses believe was the victim was seen going through the same hole in the fence on Tuesday to climb down to the beach below.
"Noticed she had moccasins on and she went down, and then there was a pretty good size jump and she jumped and kind of clung on and jumped and landed and fell, then walked around the corner and that's the last he saw of her, they didn't think much of it," the witness said.
Locals say the area is fenced off because a nearby staircase that leads to the beach below collapsed. Neighbors said they have complained and the city says repairs are planned.
