Woman Cops Say Embezzled $10M Due in Court

A woman accused of embezzling millions of dollars, and using the money to shop and gamble is scheduled to be arraigned in court Monday.

51-year-old Annette Yeomans was the chief financial officer at Quality Woodworking in San Marcos from 2001 to 2007.  In that time she allegedly embezzled close to $10 million.  The money fueled gambling and shopping sprees totaling $1,000 a month, investigators said.

"They converted a bedroom in her home to be an extra closet.  This closet had granite counter tops and a crystal chandelier," said Sgt. Mark Varnau.

Inside that closet investigators estimated $240,000 worth of shoes, $300,000 in designer clothes and $320,000 in purses.

"She had hundreds, literally 400 shoes in individual boxes with a Polaroid photo on the outside of the box, so you could see what shoe was in the box," Sgt. Varnau said.

No one at the business noticed until someone at the credit card company called.  Even Yeoman's husband, who most recently lived with her at a house in Escondido and worked at the same company, had no idea what was going on.

"It appears he just simply thought his wife made a very good income," Sgt. Varnau said.

Yeomans turned herself in at the Vista detention center Friday.  The sheriff's department called it an expensive lesson to learn.

"It's just a clear cut example of how you have to watch your dollars.  You have to know where things are going,” Sgt. Varnau said.

The lost money eventually forced the company to layoff employees, investigators said.  The company has managed to recover about $2 million by selling Yeomans' home, cars and other property.

The suspect is being held at the Vista Detention Center on $10 million bail.
