Woman Abused as Student Awarded $1.25M

Teacher, District

A jury has awarded $1.25 million to a San Diego student who was sexually molested by a teacher.

The abuse happened from the time the girl was 16 years old until she graduated in 2006.

John Lee, a former teacher at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in the Paradise Hills neighborhood, settled the civil suit out of court, but the San Diego Unified School District decided to go to trial.

The jury found that the school's former principal and some teachers negligent for not reporting the suspected sexual relationship, as required by law.

The jury determined that the district was 40 percent responsible. The victim's attorney's said that the district will be responsible for more than $700,000 of the judgment after costs and interest are assessed.
