Witness Saw Something Strange Amid the Smoke

Investigators will be back on the scene of a suspicious fire at a downtown warehouse Friday morning, trying to determine what caused it.

The fire started around 8 p.m. Thursday at a two-story warehouse at the corner of 9th and B Street.

Simon Bowles saw the smoke and flames from his window and went downstairs to shoot home video.

"The building over here was on fire," Bowles said. "Flames, flames out of the roof, yeah, pretty scary."

Firefighters say the person who made the initial 911 call saw something strange.

“They saw somebody running from the building right after the fire started,” said San Diego Fire-rescue Dept. spokesperson Maurice Luque.

What's more suspicious is that the lone business operating out of the warehouse was closed at the time of the fire, Luque said.

60 firefighters managed to get out the flames within 30 minutes.

No one was hurt and no other buildings were affected, but the fire did cause about $1.5 million in damage.
