An 85-year-old man in a wheelchair was struck and seriously injured by a pickup truck in downtown San Diego Thursday, police said.

According to officials, the collision happened just before noon at 5th Avenue and Ash Street.

A Nissan Titan pickup truck traveling northbound on 5th Avenue was stopped at a red light near the Ash Street intersection. At the same time, a man in a wheelchair crossed 5th Avenue as the light turned green for northbound traffic.

The driver of the truck did not see the wheelchair-bound man and struck him.

Police said the elderly victim sustained serious injuries, including a fractured femur and a head injury.
He was transported to UCSD Hospital while the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police temporarily closed down 5th Avenue at A Street and 6th Avenue at Ash Street during the investigation.

Further information about the victim’s current condition has not been released.
