Homicide detectives are investigating a robbery that turned into a gunfight at a Vista apartment complex.
San Diego County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Pepperwood Apartment Complex in the 2100-block of University Drive for what was reported as a gunfight.
Deputies discovered a robbery victim on the ground with gunshot wounds. He was taken to Palomar Hospital.
Witnesses told NBC 7 San Diego that they heard gunshots around 12:30 a.m.
One resident said he could tell a distinct difference in two types of gunshots.
“Yes, two different types,” said Jesus Fernandez. “We heard a gunshot and the other one was more like a just a gun."
Two suspects were spotted running from the scene deputies said.
Deputies told residents to stay out of the area for their own safety. One man told NBC 7 San Diego that officials suggested he stay out of the complex for three hours.
Other residents were awakened by safety checks from deputies.
"The police woke me up at about one or two o'clock knocking on my door. And I said 'What's going on' and he said 'We're having a disturbance around here and we'd like to know if you're alright,'” said resident Phil Wilford.
Homicide detectives arrived and attempted to preserve evidence including shell casings.
