Man Stabbed in Stomach Over Cigarette: Cops

Police said the stab wound was serious, and began to eviscerate the victim's intestines

A 53-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach Friday night after an altercation over a cigarette, police confirmed.

According to police, the stabbing happened at a home in the 1100 block of Atwater Street in the Egger Highlands neighborhood of south San Diego around 7 p.m.

San Diego Police Department Lt. David Rohowits told NBC 7 that a hysterical woman called police to report her boyfriend had been stabbed in the abdomen.

Investigators believe the woman’s 25-year-old son – whom Lt. Rohowits describes as having “psychological disabilities” – got into a scuffle with his mother’s boyfriend over a cigarette.

The two men were in the kitchen when the fight occurred, and Lt. Rohowits said the suspect used a kitchen knife or steak knife to stab his mother’s boyfriend once in the abdomen.

“The stab wound was fairly substantial; it apparently began to eviscerate his intestines,” explained Rohowits. “It was serious.”

The stabbing victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

The suspect fled from his mother’s home on foot after the stabbing. Police searched the area but were unable to immediately locate him.

Rohowits described the suspect as a white male, approximately 5-foot-8, between 140 to 160 pounds. His name has not been released.
