Driver Identified in Fatal SR-163 Crash

A San Marcos man was killed after his vehicle collided into the back of a semi tractor-trailer Sunday night, CHP authorities said.

The crash on the northbound SR-163 happened just south of Genesee Ave. in the Birdland area of San Diego at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the late model blue Dodge PT Cruiser was pinned under the rear of the truck when crews arrived.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner identified the driver as Craig Steven Donato, 48, of San Marcos.

Donato was pronounced dead at the scene according to the medical examiner.

Traffic was backed up from the accident to Friars Road as emergency personnel responded to the scene.
