Serial Vandals Strike at Least 33 Vehicles in Chula Vista Area

Chula Vista police are looking for the public’s help stopping serial vandals from causing more damage to cars parked on the street at night.

Between Feb. 12 and Feb. 21, police said an unidentified suspects vandalized at least 33 vehicles in the Eastlake and Otay Ranch areas of Chula Vista.

Large rocks, a baseball bat and/or a crow bar were used to break car windows in the neighborhood.

Several witnesses reported seeing a black Volkswagen Jetta and silver late model Audi A4 leaving the crime scene, police said.

Catherine Caloca hoped to save some space, but it instead cost her some serious damage.

β€œWe don't have the extra coverage so we are going to have to pay out-of-pocket for it,” Caloca said.

Caloca says it could take $250 to fix the windshield. She is one of 14 homeowners who parked cars on the street last weekend and will pay a similar price.

β€œThis is thousands of dollars worth of damage. These are hard working people that go to work every day,” CB Capt. Lon Turner said.

Caloca believes it was a younger person. "If it was a bigger person they probably would have smashed through the windshield," she said.

Investigators share Catherine's suspicions. Turner said the suspects are likely juveniles. The crimes are happening on or around weekends and sometime between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.

β€œThere is not a pattern specific to the vehicle. It does appear to be random. There is no connection between victims,” Turner said.

Investigators say typically there are one or two multiple acts of vandalism a year, but not like this -- considerable damage in a short period of time.

Police say the best witnesses in these case are usually family and friends of the perpetrators, so keep your ears and eyes open. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chula Vista Police Department at (619) 407-3528.
