Brush Fire Burns Near Police Shooting Range

The blaze scorched a couple of acres near Lake Wohlford in Valley Center

San Diego fire crews rushed to Valley Center Tuesday afternoon to battle a brush fire burning near a police shooting range, officials confirmed.

The blaze began around 2:40 p.m. at 25800 Valley Center Rd., near Lake Wohlford and the Escondido Police Department Firing Range, Cal Fire officials said.

It quickly scorched two to three acres, but by 3 p.m. Cal Fire officials tweeted that the forward rate of spread of the blaze had been stopped.

Several Cal Fire and Escondido Fire Department crews are on scene working to knock out the fire. Several aircraft are tackling the blaze overhead, too.

Officials said people at the Escondido Police Department Firing Range have been told to shelter in place. No evacuations have been ordered and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the brush fire is under investigation.
