Utilities Pledge No Cutoffs

Even if the utility bill is past due, the lights on the Christmas tree will stay on and the oven cooking the big turkey will stay hot ---- California's utilities say they won't cut off anyone's power this holiday season.

San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and The Gas Company promised at a meeting of the California Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday that no one would have their electricity or gas cut off between Dec. 21 and Jan. 4. Southern California Edison began its moratorium on Dec. 15, though it also will end on Jan. 4.

The announcement came a month after the commission's Division of Ratepayer Advocates slammed some of the utilities for cutting off more customers than ever in these hard times.
