Man's Arm Severed in Oak Park Crash

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the two-vehicle accident at University and 54th.

A man's arm was severed in a two-vehicle crash in Oak Park this morning. Police believe alcohol was involved.

According to police, the 56-year-old man was driving his Toyota Prius through a green light on eastbound University Avenue when it was struck by a Nissan truck that ran a red light on northbound 54th Street.

The Prius rolled onto its driver's side and slid across the road.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors say he will probably lose his arm but should survive.

The 50-year-old driver of the Nissan truck was booked for DUI. He was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. One of the truck's passengers tried to flee the scene, but was detained and later released.

Police issued a Sig Alert this morning as they diverted traffic from the area.
