The United States Olympic Field Hockey Team’s hopes of advancing to the medal round took a big hit Thursday morning as they lost to Australia 1-0 in group play.
The Aussies out-muscled and outplayed the Americans for much of the game out shooting the U.S. 14-7.
The U.S. team, which trains at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center, had its chances especially in the first half when Lauren Crandall missed a penalty stroke that would have put America up 1-0. About four minutes later Anna Flanagan scored from a penalty corner to put the Aussies up for good.
The Americans have struggled to score throughout the Olympics managing just two goals so far in three games.
The loss dropped the Americans back in Group B likely needing wins in their remaining games against South Africa and New Zealand to have any chance at finishing in the Top 2 of the group. They get their chance to make that happen Saturday when the play New Zealand.
