Two Killed in Fiery Wreck Believed to be Marines

Car hit tree, burst into flames

Two 20-year-old men who authorities believe are active duty Marines were killed in a fiery weekend crash in North County.

The county medical examiner said in a statement that the two men were driving in a Dodge sedan in their hometown of Vista on Saturday night when the driver lost control and hit a tree.  The vehicle immediately burst into flames, the statement said.  A California Highway Patrol Officer found the car and called firefighters, who put out the blaze and found two badly burned bodies inside. Personal items found at the scene indicated the victims were active duty U.S. Marines, according to the sheriff's department.

The coroner's office did not release the men's identities pending notification of relatives, but officials  said the passenger was 20 and left behind a wife and infant child.  Marine Corps officials were working to verify the men's identities.
