Person Hit by Hammer, Injured in High School Fight in Escondido

At least two people were injured following an after-school fight near a high school in Escondido, officials said.

According to the Escondido Police Department, they received the initial call at 1:45 p.m. from Escondido High School about rumors of a possible fight after school.

Officers doing extra patrol were directed to the fight on W El Norte Parkway and N Broadway. But when they arrived on scene, the fight had broken up.

One person had been hit in the chest with a hammer and was transported to Palomar Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Escondido Union High School District officials say one person involved was not a student, though others involved may have been students. The district is allowing Escondido Police to investigate and say they do everything they can to maintain a safe campus.

In regards to the hammer, a district spokeswoman said it is unclear if the hammer came from a woodshop class or not. It is not illegal to bring a tool, like a hammer, onto campus.

Police say they are unsure of what caused this fight.

It's unknown how many students were involved, but all of them were from high school, police said.

There were no arrests made and the fight is still under investigation, police said.
