Turn Off The Sprinklers

Water use citywide is up compared to this time last year and commercial users are to blame, according to city officials.

Water use went up 1.5 percent compared to January of 2009. The water department says businesses used about 5 percent more than they did at this time last year.

Residents used 1.5 percent less water.

Overall, water use is down 10.5 percent since mandatory restrictions last June.

Mayor Jerry Sanders reminded San Diegans that the rainy season is the perfect time to save water.

"The latest numbers are a reminder that we can't afford to slack off, no matter how well we have done in the past," Mayor Sanders said.
