Car Flies Off Highway Into Parked Semi

A car veering off the westbound SR 94 and down an embankment, just west of South Barcelona Street, gave residents a scare, just before 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning.

The car came off the highway and landed on the side street, hitting a semi tractor-trailer. The car slammed head first into the side of the truck, which was parked on the side of the road.

The car's driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Officers said her injuries were not life threatening.

"So far we know, the vehicle was traveling westbound, unknown reason, [and] traveled off the roadway and then struck this vehicle, this tractor right here on Cordova," said California Highway Patrol Lt. Millan Mateo.

The impact of the car wasn't very loud according to nearby residents.

"It wasn't very loud, because of the big plastic way that trailer truck is," said Jeff Lanoue, who lives nearby.

Local residents say cars running off the freeway at that location is a common occurrence.

"Over the last 10 years, we've had more than 11 accidents out here, more than 10 no matter what,” Lanoue said.

Other residents felt that there was an accident at that location at least every 6 months.

The Highway Patrol says in the nearly 1 mile stretch between Kenwood Drive and Avocado Blvd, there have been 10 accidents in the past 4 years going in both directions.

According to them, not an unusually high number.
