A train struck and killed a pedestrian in Encinitas Thursday evening, officials confirmed.

The collision occurred just past 6 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Coast Highway, near San Elijo Avenue and Verdi Avenue.

According to Sgt. Emory Wallace with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, a Coaster train was traveling southbound when it hit the pedestrian.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wallace said the pedestrian has not yet been identified. The Medical Examiner will handle that portion of the investigation and release the individual's name at a later time.

The train was temporarily stopped as deputies investigated. Sgt. Wallace said transit safety personnel also responded to the site to help direct other trains in the area.
