A train in Vista collided with a car Monday, sending one person to the hospital and forcing the evacuation of 40 train passengers.

The Sprinter train was traveling along North Ave. near Melrose Dr. just before 7 p.m. when it hit the car, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The driver of the car reportedly drove through a closed crossing gate as the train was passing through, an official with the North County Transit District said.

One of the people inside the car was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

About 100 passengers from the train were evacuated. No one on the train was injured and the passengers were shuttled between College Blvd. and the Vista Transit Center.

Sheriff's deputies are on the scene while rail enforcement personnel evaluate the collision. It is not known at this time what caused the collision.
