Freon Leak Prompts Hazmat Situation at Chula Vista Costco, Sickens Multiple People

A freon leak at a Chula Vista Costco sickened multiple people and closed the store Sunday, authorities said.

The leak happened at 3:50 p.m. at the Costco at 895 E. H Street in Chula Vista, San Diego Fire-Rescue (SDFD) officials and Chula Police Police (CVPV) said.

CVPD said it appears someone was working on a forklift inside the store and hit a refrigerator pipe, causing a Hazmat situation.

Seven employees were evaluated and four people were hospitalized.

The store was closed for the rest of the day.

Officials say none of the customers were affected by the freon leak. Costco did not issue a statement regarding the incident.
