Toddler Injured in La Mesa Hit-and-Run

A child wandered into a La Mesa intersection and was struck by a van. Now, police are looking for the driver who didn't stop at the scene of the accident.

La Mesa police responded to the corner of Fletcher Parkway and Trolley Court around 8 p.m. Thursday.

A 2 year old boy had been hit by a van. The driver, police said, fled the scene.

Apparently the child somehow walked to the intersection without his parents. Other drivers who saw the child being hit came to his aid.

Robert Olague was working at a nearby restaurant and heard tires screeching.

β€œThat was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Olague who became a father himself just last week. β€œI saw that, it was just the worst thing I’ve ever seen. It was pretty sad.”

The toddler was transported to Rady Children's Hospital with a severe head injury. Police say the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Police are trying to check surveillance video to see if they can track down the vehicle and the driver.
