Toddler “Extremely Fortunate” to Survive Hit-and-Run

La Mesa police still searching for van's driver

A toddler is "extremely fortunate" to have survived a hit-and-run collision on one of the east San Diego County's busiest streets, La Mesa police Lt. Dan Willis said Friday.

The 2-year-old boy wandered from his parents at about 8 p.m. Thursday and was struck by a van on the 8600 block of Fletcher Parkway. He was transported to Rady Children's Hospital with a severe head injury.

"That child is extremely fortunate that it wasn't much more serious an accident, or hit more directly," Willis said. "It could have been a tragedy all the way around, and fortunately, it looks like he will eventually recover."

Authorities are still searching for the collision's driver.

Willis says it is imperative the driver comes forward.

"If the drive doesn't know he or she hit someone last night, but now realize they did," Willis said, "they should call La Mesa PD now."

The speed limit at the involved stretch of Fletcher Parkway is 45 miles per hour.
