Time to ‘Drop' Pension Perks: DeMaio

DeMaio criticizes one of the City of San Diego retirement benefits

City Councilmember and mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio says it's time to drop the DROP pension perk.

The Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) is a benefit that allows city employees to collect both their pensions and salaries for five years after they retire.

"Drop is one of the most abusive pension perks at city hall," DeMaio said. "My proposal today will end this notorious program that costs tax payers hundreds of millions of dollars."

DeMaio says 6500 city employees are still eligible for DROP.

The plan he discussed in Thursday's announcement is part of his Roadmap to Recovery plan.

He says city employees should split the contribution into the pension system equally with the city.
