Challenged Athlete Foundation Hosts Training Camp in San Diego

The Challenged Athlete Foundation (CAF) hosted a paratriathlon training camp in San Diego May 17-19. The camp follows the mission of the CAF to provide opportunities and support to people with physical challenges, so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics.

Among the 10 paratriathletes participating in this camp was Chele Teabout. While at work as a correction officer in New York, on June 17th, 1997, Teabout was hit in the back of the leg by a 500 pound out of control cart. Her injuries lead to 29 operations, she gained 100 pounds and dealt with severe depression and suicidal thoughts.

In 2014, Teabout had her left leg amputated below the knee. Roughly a year later, she connected with CAF’s Operation Rebound Program for military, police and first responders.

Teabout was invited to San Diego to see what CAF does and get a feel for what challenged athletes can accomplish. Shortly after that, she attended a CAF paratriathlon camp and her life was changed forever.

Teabout received a CAF grant for a bicycle, training expenses and a running foot.

Now, she has lost 170 pounds and completed 11 triathlons. More importantly, she’s happy, healthy and loving life. Teabout calls CAF a lifesaver.
