Text Message Foils OC Robbery

Woman texts for help during a break-in

Police in Santa Ana spent several hours Thursday searching for three men suspected of breaking into a home where a 23-year-old woman was alone in a back bedroom.

The woman first thought one of her dogs was at the door, but then she heard voices so she reached for her cell phone and texted her father.

The woman's father, Joe Rodriguez, later told police he panicked and jumped in his car and began driving home. According to Santa Ana police, the woman also texted a friend and then texted for more help from her father.

The robbers were moving from room to room. Her father begged her to call 911, but she texted that the suspects might hear her.

Then, the robbers found her alone in the bedroom.

She told them she has just called the police. They fled as the police arrived.

Officers searched the neighborhood, but failed to find any suspects.

Neighbors think the robbers targeted the working class neighborhood because most people are gone during the day. Most, except one young woman with a cell phone.
