Teens to Stand Trial on Rape, Kidnap Charges

The 16-year-old boys could face life sentences

Two 16-year-old boys have been ordered to stand trial on charges of raping two girls in a Rancho Penasquitos park over Labor Day weekend.

At Monday’s preliminary hearing, the two teenage victims said at the time of the crime, they left a relative's party and went a nearby park to talk.

The girls testified they were attacked from behind and repeatedly assaulted at knifepoint.

Leonel Contreras, 16, and William Steven Rodriguez, 16, have pleaded not guilty to 16 felony charges that include kidnapping and sodomy.

Contreras and Rodriguez are being charged as adults and could face life sentences if convicted.

A Superior Court arraignment is set for Jan. 9, when Deputy District Attorney Wendy Patrick says she plans to add several sexual assault counts.
