State and local police are investigating the discovery of human remains of a Newtown woman who went missing in 1984.

A 16-year-old told police Friday that a man in a ski mask sexually assaulted her.

The girl told Escondido police she was walking in a flood-control channel near the intersection of North Ash Street and East Valley Parkway a little before 8:30 a.m. in Escondido when the man confronted her. The victim said the man demanded several items -- police would not say what was stolen -- before he raped her.

The suspect appeared to be in his 30s, the girl told police, who added that the attacker was also wearing white sunglasses.

A manhunt of the surrounding area, including Washington Park, failed to turn up the rapist.
