The U.S. Coast Guard joined Oceanside police and lifeguards in the search for a swimmer reported missing Sunday.

A person in a wet suit  was reported missing just before 8 p.m. about 200 yards from shore near the Oceanside pier officials said.

The man was described as "in distress."

Two harbor police boats initially searched the area and a Coast Guard helicopter was launched about an hour later.

A command post was set up on The Strand S with traffic diverted from Sea Gaze and Wisconsin Avenue.

As of Monday morning, the MH-60 Jayhawk continued to search the area along with the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin from Santa Barbara.

If the swimmer was wearing a wet suit, Coast Guard officials say the survivability in current conditions is approximately 38 hours.

If anyone knows of a friend or family members who was planning on taking a swim near the Oceanside Pier Sunday, call the U.S. Coast Guard at 619-278-7031.
