Suspicious Device Prompts Evacuations in Encinitas

San Diego County Sheriff’s Department evacuated homes in Encinitas after the report of a suspicious device.

Someone called deputies around 5:50 a.m. Monday saying they discovered a possible pipe bomb near Sea Breeze Court and La Costa Avenue.

Deputies evacuated several homes in the area and called in the bomb/arson unit.

Officials said the device was created to resemble a pipe bomb.

“It was a piece of pvc pipe about 12 inches long wrapped on the ends with black tape and in the middle was a timer device, something meant to appear like a timer with wires sticking out of it,” said Sgt. Roberto Lopez.

Officials took about 20 minute to detonate the fake bomb.

There was a road closure near Interstate 5 and La Costa Avenue causing some delays for morning commuters.

There was no damage. No one was injured.

Officials haven't ruled out that the person who originally called 911 was same person who planted it.

The person who created and left the device could face felony charges officials said.
