Suspect Nabbed in Carlsbad Patrol Car Shooting

The vehicle burglary suspect accused of shooting and disabling a Carlsbad police patrol car has been arrested, investigators announced Thursday.

Cameron Avery Valentine, 27, faces a  variety of charges after police say he escaped the scene of a burglary on La Costa Boulevard Wednesday in a tan Ford Ranger pickup.

When a Carlbad officer gave chase, Valentine fired a gun out the truck's back window, striking the patrol vehicle several times, according to investigators.

The pursuit ended when the police cruiser broke down three miles later, and the suspect got away. The officer inside the car was not injured.

An ensuing investigation led officers to a house on Norwich Street in Clairemont Thursday morning. San Diego police officers, aiding Carlsbad, detained two men of interest at a gas station near the house.

One of those men, Valentine, was arrested shortly after on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, vehicle burglary and felony evading a police officer.

"Investigators, with the assistance of other countywide law enforcement agencies, have used all available resources and have worked around-the-clock toward the resolution of this incident," said Investigation Captain Neil Gallucci in a release. "We are very grateful our officer was not injured during this incident. The welfare of our community and our officers is our top priority."

Carlsbad police say Valentine was the only one in the pickup truck during Wednesday's chase. He will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
