The suspect in a Spring Valley burglary tried to escape by jumping into a nearby reservoir but instead drowned.

San Diego County sheriff’s deputies say someone called 911 after 3 p.m. Tuesday reporting a burglary in the 9000 block of Camino Lago Vista – just a few blocks from the Sweetwater Reservoir.

Witnesses told deputies that when the homeowner discovered the burglary, the suspect ran and jumped into the reservoir. Other witnesses reportedly told deputies they had spotted the man walking on a nearby street.

After several hours, deputies called in a dive team to search the water for the suspect.

Officials found the man’s body around 9 p.m.

The county medical examiner has not identified the man but described him as between the ages of 25 and 35 years old.
