Suspect Believed to Have Pipe Bombs Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff

A suspect was taken into custody and the scene cleared after an hours-long standoff with officers in Chula Vista that prompted nearby evacuations.

The suspect, who police believed was armed with pipe bombs, was taken into custody without incident  at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

At about 4:15 p.m., Chula Vista police were called to the home in the 300 block of Anita Street.

More than three hours later, they responded again and talked with a man locked in a room, saying he will not come out.

They said the suspect was known to have several pipe bombs. Police did not find any pipe bombs in his home.

Police are asking people to avoid the area, though there is no word on if they are asking for evacuations.
