String of Machete Robberies Hits SD

Two gas station robbery suspects used machetes in the past two days

Police are investigating two recent robberies in which the suspects wielded an unusual weapon and demanded cash from gas station stores.

On Tuesday evening at about 7:30 p.m., a man in his 20s wielded a machete at the Shell Gas Station in Loma Portal, west of Old Town. He fled on foot toward Hancock St.

On Wednesday night in La Mesa at about 9:45 p.m., a man with a similar description threatened an employee at the Circle K gas station on La Mesa Boulevard with "a large knife" and demanded cash. He also fled on foot before police could respond.

Investigators don't know yet if the two incidents are related, but San Diego Police and La Mesa Police are in communication to determine if the suspect was the same.
