Stone Brewing Plans Tap Room in Napa, California

The San Diego-based brewery’s venture north will be housed in the 10,000-square-foot historic Borreo building in Napa, California

Stone Brewing plans to tap the Northern California beer market next year by opening a new tap room and brewery in Napa, the company announced Friday.

The Escondido-based brewer will hop about 500 miles north to the region renownedfor its wineries with Stone Brewing Tap Room: Napa, slated to open in 2017.

The tap room will be housed in the 10,000-square-foot historic Borreo building in downtown Napa located on 3rd Street and Soscol Avenue, the company confirmed.

Renovations to the site are now underway, as the 19th century building – which, fittingly is made of stone – has been vacant for the past 15 years. The building was completed in 1877 and features a distinctive design made of native-cut stone.

The brewing company says it plans to keep many of the Borreo building’s historic elements intact, but will transform the building’s western wall to add doors to a garden that faces the Napa River.

The new tap room will include a 10-barrel pilot brewing system, dining room, growler refills and Stone merchandise. The space will include an outdoor seating area with communal tables, fire pits and view overlooking downtown Napa.

“The historic Borreo building is the perfect space for us to put down our roots in Napa,” said Greg Koch, Stone Brewing CEO and co-founder in a press release. “We recognize the high quality of wine that comes from the region and the appreciation that Napa Valley locals and visitors have for fresh, well-crafted drink. We are elated to become a contributing part of such an artisanal town.”

The company says the Napa venture will produce Stone’s most popular year-round brews, as well as special releases, using both core recipes and ingredients specific to the local geography.

The dining menu will include both dine-in and carry-out items, and Stone intends to purchase local and small-farm organic produce from the Napa region to create dishes that highlight local flavors.

The NorCal project has been on Koch’s radar for years. Koch has been visiting the Napa region for more than 20 years and first toured the Borreo building site about five years ago.

“I’m a huge Napa fan,” said Koch. “We’ve tried a few times to make something happen there, and are thrilled to finally see it come to fruition!”

This tap room joins two other Stone expansion projects already underway: Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Berlin, Germany, which opens this summer, and Stone Brewing – Richmond, which begins producing brews from its 250-barrel brewhouse in Richmond, Virginia, this July.

Stone Brewing is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. The San Diego-based company was founded by Koch and Steve Wagner in 1996 and is the 10th largest craft brewer in the United States.
