Stolen Car Crashes into SUV, Injuring Woman, 2 Children

A woman and two children in the SUV were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries

Two men suspected of stealing a car broadsided an SUV, sending it into an Escondido home Sunday evening and injuring a woman and two children, police said.

The car then spun out and crashed into three parked cars on South Quince Street and West 10th Avenue, Escondido police Sgt. Christopher Leso said.

The woman and two kids inside the SUV, a Honda CVR, were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, he said.

"It's crazy," Jalen Walker, who lives in the area, said. "I can't even process how this all happened."

This all started when the car, a red Hyundai Elantra, was reported stolen around 5:30 p.m. About an hour later, officers spotted the stolen car several blocks away from where the crash happened.

Officers tried to pull over the car but the suspects fled. They then ran a stop sign at South Quince Street and West 10th Avenue, broadsided the CVR causing it to crash into a nearby home.

The car then spun out and hit three parked cars, pushing them forward by at least one car length.

The three parked cars belonged to Walker and his family. Walker was at home with his wife when his brother in-law-alerted him to the crash.

"We all came outside to take a look," he said. "All the cars were pushed forward, there're cops out here. The guy's being held at gunpoint. They had the K-9s out, everything."

Both suspects were injured in the crash and taken to Palomar Medical Center Escondido, Leso said.

"The officers were able to take in both suspects out of their car without any significant use of force," he said.

A building inspector was called to inspect the home and determined the damages were cosmetic and not structural, Leso said.

Walker said he has never seen anything like this in the neighborhood before. He's lived there for three years and his wife's family has been there for much longer.

The most pressing concern for him now is the damage cars and three family members without transportation. He said his family has worked hard for the cars, especially a black truck that's been in the family the longest. He said his father-in-law uses to the truck to provide for the entire family.

"It's all gone in an instant because someone wanted to steal someone's car," he said.
