Comedy legend Steve Martin will hold the world premiere of his stage musical at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater. And no, it's not a musical version of "The Three Amigos."

“Bright Eyes” will hit the stage on Sept. 13 this year.

Based on an original story by Martin and his tour partner Edie Brickell, the play is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1922 and 1945.

According to a casting call, the plot centers on a young man who returns from World War II and uncovers hidden yearnings, as well as dark secrets about his past.

It will feature bluegrass songs from Brickell and Martin’s Grammy winning album “Love Has Come for You.”

The “Father of the Bride” star -- also a banjo-aficionado --  penned the musical’s book, Brickell wrote the lyrics, and together they composed the music, the Globe said.

The bluegrass duo have worked in harmony for some time, going on tour with Martin’s band the Steep Canyon Rangers since 2013.

Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie will take the helm of the production, making his Globe debut as the director.

For years, the Globe’s stage has acted as launching platform for future Broadway hits. Plays such as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “The Full Monty” and “Damn Yankees” were developed there before taking the stage in New York and in theaters across the country.

Tickets for the 2014-2015 Globe season are currently only available by subscription, and those prices range from $99 to $615.
