An Adelanto, Calif., mother has been fined nearly $4,000 because her four young children don't show up for school.
The San Bernardino County judge could have fined 31-year-old Michelle Evans $10,505 for 11 charges of failing to get her elementary school-aged children to school.
Instead, the judge suspended all but four of the $955-each fines -- one for each child -- totaling $3,820. Evans will be allowed to pay the fines at the rate of $25 per month.
The woman was convicted a year ago for the same offense. Truancy cases rarely come before a judge, but the Adelanto School District wasn't getting the message through to Evans.
Evans has now been ordered to enroll the children in school and attend parenting classes.
