Smoke, Flames Showed from Southcrest Home; Fire Deemed Suspicious: Capt.

A fire at a one story Southcrest home has been deemed suspicious, San Diego Fire Captain Amador said.

The fire, which started in the living room and kitchen area of the house, started at 5:24 p.m. on the 3800 block of National Avenue. Because of the home's proximity to other homes, firefighters said it was a close call.

When firefighters first arrived, big flames were coming from the roof and smoke was pouring from the structure. The single story home was completely engulfed, Amador said.

The fire was out within 15 minutes and it was prevented from spreading to other homes.

Crews said they found a side door unlocked and mattresses on the ground inside, a sign of squatters.

The home sustained an estimated $105,000 in damage.

It is unclear why the fire was deemed suspicious.

Neighbors said the home has been empty for a few months now.
