Local Dentist Office Goes Up in Flames, Smoke Seen for Miles in Bankers Hill, Balboa Park

A local dentist office went up in flames Monday afternoon, sending thick black smoke into the air for miles above Bankers Hill and San Diego's iconic Balboa Park.

The fire broke out at approximately 3:15 p.m. Monday at the dentist's office on the 2700 block of 3rd Avenue, fire officials said. The building is north of Laurel Street and west of Sixth Avenue, west of The Old Globe and the San Diego Museum of Man.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) Media Services Manager Lee Swanson said the fire broke out in a two-story commercial building. The sign on the building identifies the building as Uptown Smiles Dentistry.

San Diego Police officials said a witness told police the entire building was engulfed and people may be inside.

NBC 7’s Meteorologist Dagmar said the Santa Ana conditions are in effect for the fire with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.

No other information was immediately available.
