Skateboarder Shot in National City: Police

A skateboarder was found with a gunshot wound on his back late Sunday night, according to National City police.

Around 11 p.m. last night police responded to a call on the 300-block of 8th Street.They found the victim on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound in the back.

Police said the 22-year-old man got off the trolley after work, and then was riding his skateboard the rest of the way home when he was shot.

The suspect was heading eastbound when he heard a gunshot, then felt pain in his back, according to police. He was able to call 911 on his own.

Witnesses tell police they heard two gunshots and saw a car fleeing the scene. Police did not confirm any details about the car or if there was more than one suspect.

The victim was rushed to UCSD Medical Center trauma and is being treated for serious injuries. The victim suffered a fractured rib and had surgery to remove the bullet.

The suspect is still at large.

Police said the shooting may have been a random act, as the victim and suspect were likely strangers.
