Skateboarder Struck By Car in Mission Bay, Severely Injured

A skateboarder hit by car in Mission Bay Sunday night was severely injured, police said.

The 22-year-old man fell off his skateboard and ran after it into traffic when he was hit by a car in the 1300 block of West Mission Bay Drive, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

Buttle said the skateboarder chased his board through eastbound lanes and hopped the center divider before he was struck in westbound lanes.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital with life-threatening injuries, Buttle said. He is not breathing on his own.

The driver, who was not suspected to be under the influence, remained at the scene.

Traffic on West Mission Bay Drive was blocked in both directions while the investigation was underway.
