Six Face Trial in Carlsbad Slaying

Testimony from Hunter said that he planned to rob Sahagun

Six people charged with roles in a Carlsbad slaying in 2011 are scheduled to stand trial for murder.

Michael Sahagun, 63, was found shot to death about 1:30 a.m. on April 1, 2011, during a pre-planned robbery outside of the detached garage of his home on Valley Street.

Six people arrested in the crime - Grant Hunter, Joseph Verkade, Heather Strauch, Michael Gault, Mercedes Yorba and Jason Breer - were ordered to stand trial Tuesday on murder and other charges. All six have pleaded not guilty.

According to our media partner, The North County Times, testimony from Hunter said that he planned to rob Yorba's drug dealer of methamphetamine, heroin, and $2,000 in cash.

Verkade faces allegations of shooting and killing Sahagun.
