Short Tunnel Uncovered Near Border

A tunnel ending just north of the border east of Otay Mesa Port of Entry was uncovered Saturday.

The San Diego Tunnel Task Force uncovered the tunnel with information gathered by the Border Patrol.

Reinforced by lumber, the 3-foot by 3-foot tunnel is connected to a storm drain that runs perpendicular to the border, according to agents.

The opening to the tunnel is a man-made hole in the storm drain about 110 feet north of the border near Via de la Amistad, less than one-quarter of a mile east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, agents said.

What’s not known is what the tunnel was used for or where it was headed. Agents said they suspect the tunnel is linked from the storm drain to a paralleling cross-border natural gas pipeline, which is non-operational.

No arrests have been made.
